Abstract

One of the travelling gantry beams has its end nearest the other one raised on its track, and it pivots at its other end, allowing it to be brought exactly into line with the other beam for the crab to be transferred from one to the other. Typically, this movement can be effected by a jack, stopped when two contacts on the beams meet. Travel of the crab along the beams can be restricted by stops at the ends, which are only retracted when the two beams are locked in line by a plunger extending into aligned bores in the beam ends.
