Abstract

761,559. Yarns and threads. BURKARDT, A. F. Aug. 31, 1953 No. 23998/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 120 (3). A yarn having a predetermined relative wet strength differing from the normal dry and wet strength of the component fibres thereof is produced by combining in the yarn at least two different kinds of natural or synthetic fibre one having (a) natural bast fibres such as hemp, flax, and/or ramie, which have been degummed and bleached and thereby preshrunk (and reduced to natural fibre length) or, (b) nylon, wool or cotton or (c) rayon or casein fibre, each admixed with such bast fibres. The Specification provides formulae separately expressing the percentage weights of the bast fibre (a) and the other constituents (b) and (c) of a composite yarn in terms of the wet and dry strengths and unit weight of both the yarn and the constituent materials. Sliver composed of the bast fibre, wholly or in admixture with other fibres which are to be incorporated in the yarn, is formed into roving (which, by the nature of the fibres, may be shrink-proof) and, in combination with similar rovings or rovings composed of the other fibres which are to be incorporated in the yarn, dry spun into yarn. The yarn of the invention is used alone or mixed with other yarns composed wholly of cotton, wool, or the other fibres (b) and (c) or a mixture thereof, to produce fabric having predetermined wet and dry strengths e.g. in a woven fabric, a pre-shrunk composite yarn may constitute all the warp yarns or all the weft yarns or constitute a part of one or the other or both.
