Abstract
761,366. Attenuators. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 6, 1954 [Sept. 5, 1953], No. 24600/53. Class 40 (8). The energy in a waveguide or a coaxial line is attenuated by introducing an attenuating fluid, e.g. water, into the guide or line. As applied to a guide 1, water is circulated from a reservoir 3 by a pump 4 through a valve 5, a dielectric body 2 which may have baffles, a valve 9, and back to the reservoir 3. The water is removed quickly by sending hot, dry air through the body 2 by means of a pump 12. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) both the water and air systems have by-pass pipes to allow the water and the air to be continually circulated. The valves 5, 9 may be operated by a common control shaft. Similar systems may be used for supplying water and air through a dielectric body 2 in a coaxial line 20, 21. The fluid may be circulated directly through sections of a guide or line physically isolated by dielectric sheets. The fluid may be a gas or vapour, e.g. water vapour.
