Abstract

761,014. Photographic emulsions. HALDEN & CO., Ltd., J., and HOLDEN, J. Aug. 24, 1954. No. 24553/54. Class 98(2) In the process of preparing a photographic element, a gelatine silver halide emulsion is treated with an enzyme to degrade the gelatine before the emulsion is: coated on to a support. The treatment enables the coated emulsion to be heat-dried. Binding agents such as a partially hydrolyzed acrylic acid-vinyl acetate copolymer or other natural or synthetic resin or an aqueous emulsion of a wax may be added to the enzyme-treated emulsion. The viscosity of the coating may be adjusted by adding methyl cellulose to the emulsion. Enzymes specified are trypsin, erepsin and pepsin, and bacteria may be used to produce the enzymes in situ. In an example, tripsin is added to a shredded, washed, silver halide emulsion in gelatin at a pH of 7 to 8 and a temperature of 35 ‹C. After addition of an aqueous dispersion of a vinyl copolymer, the emulsion is coated on paper and dried at 60-70‹C. Specification 258,237 [Class 98(ii)] is referred to.
