Abstract

664,230. Photographic emulsions. KODAK, Ltd. Nov. 18, 1949 [Nov. 18, 1948], No. 29568/49. Class 98 (ii). The speed of a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion is increased by the incorporation of bis - (p - aminoethyl) - sulphide, a non-desensitizing water-soluble salt thereof, or bis- (y - diethylaminopropyl) - disulphide. The emulsion may also contain a sulphur sensitizer incorporated before, simultaneously with, or after the speed-increasing compound, and may also contain an optical sensitizer. The compound may be added during digestion of the emulsion, so that further digestion occurs after the addition. At least one emulsion layer of a colour photographic multilayer material may be so prepared. In example 1, the effect on the fog, gamma, and speed of a gelatine emulsion peptized with a gelatine derivative as described in Specification 649,545 of additions of allyl thiourea, of bis-(#-aminoethyl)-sulphide dihydrochloride, and of both allyl thiourea and bis - (# - aminoethyl) - sulphide dihydrochloride is shown in a table. In example 2, a similar comparison is made of the effect of additions of allyl thiourea, bis-(y-diethylaminopropyl)- disulphide on gelatine and polyvinyl alcohol silver bromiodide emulsions. The speed increase is effective at a fairly low pH, such as 6.0, and the increase obtained with a sulphursensitized emulsion is considerably greater than would be expected from the speed increases obtained by the use of the individual sensitizers. The emulsion binder may also be a copolymer of polyvinyl alcohol or a partially hydrolysed cellulose ester (e.g. cellulose acetate). Specification 235,211, [Claas 98 (ii)], also is referred to.
