Abstract

558,099. Photographic sensitive materials. KODAK, Ltd., and KNOTT, E. B. April 21, 1942, No. 5300. [Class 98 (ii)] The tendency for a sensitizing dye to wander from a dye-sensitized silver salt emulsion to a neighbouring silver salt emulsion is reduced by adding to the dye-sensitized emulsion (before bringing it into association with the neighbouring emulsion) a sensitive silver salt emulsion which is slower and of finer grain than either, The emulsion may be mixed or coated in successive layers without an intervening layer, and both may be dye-sensitized. The slow emulsion may be a Lippmann type emulsion and may have a threshold speed of not more than a fifth of that of the slower of the other emulsions. All three may be silver bromide, or all three silver chloride, emulsions. The finer the grain of the slow emulsion, the less the quantity that is usually necessary. The slow emulsion may also be added to the neighbouring emulsion. In Example 1, to a contrasty gelatino silver bromide emulsion is added an acetone solution of 5-(2-ethyl-1-(2)- benzoxazolylidene - ethylidene) - 3 - heptyl - 1 - phenyl - 2 - thiohydantoin and then a slow gelatino silver bromide Lippmann type emulsion. The product is mixed with a soft gelatino silver bromide emulsion to which Lippmann type emulsion has also been added, and the mixed emulsion coated. In Example 2, to a contrasty gelatino silver chloride emulsion sensitized with the dye of Example 1 is added a slow fine-grain gelatino silver chloride emulsion, and the product is then mixed with a soft gelatino silver chloride emulsion to which also has been added the slow finegrain emulsion, and the mixed emulsion is coated. In Example 3, the procedure is as in Example 1, but the two emulsions are applied to a support in adjacent layers. The use of mixed emulsions and superimposed emulsion layers in colour photography and multi-contrast material is referred to. Specifications 524,552, 532,098, 540,451, 540,464, and 544,134 are referred to.
