Abstract

661,645. Photographic emulsions. KODAK, Ltd. Nov. 18, 1949 [Nov. 18, 1948], No. 29569/49. Class 98 (ii). The speed of a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion is increased by the incorporation of a compound of the general formula H 2 N(RNH) n RNH 2 , wherein n is 1 to 5 (preferably 1 to 3) and R is an alkylene chain of from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, or a water-soluble non-desensitizing salt thereof. Compounds specified are diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, and tetraethylene pentamine. The emulsion may also contain a sulphur sensitizer incorporated before, simultaneously with, or after the speedincreasing compound, and may also contain an optical sensitizer. The compound may be added during digestion of the emulsion, so that further digestion occurs after the addition. At least one emulsion layer of a colour photographic multilayer material may be so prepared. In example 1, the effect on the fog, gamma, and speed of a gelatine emulsion peptized with a gelatine derivative as described in Specification 649,545, of additions of diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, and tetraethylene pentamine is shown in a table. In example 2, the effect of additions of allyl thiourea, of allyl thiourea and triethylene tetramine, and of allyl thiourea and tetraethylene pentamine is similarly shown in a table. In examples 3 and 4, similar tables are given. The speed increase is effective at a fairly low pH, such. as 6.0, and the increase obtained with a sulphur sensitized emulsion is usually considerably greater than would be expected from the speed increases obtained by the use of the individual sensitizers. The emulsion binder may also be polyvinyl alcohol, a copolymer of polyvinyl alcohol, or a partially hydrolysed cellulose ester (e.g. cellulose acetate). Specification 235,211, [Class 98 (ii)], also is referred to.
