Abstract

1,260,710. Developing photographic silver halide light-sensitive elements. FUJI PHOTO FILM CO. Ltd. July 21, 1969 [July 23, 1968], No.36621/69. Heading G2C. A method of developing exposed photographic silver halide light-sensitive elements comprises developing the said element in the presence of a compound of the formula:- wherein Z represents an atom or a group of atoms necessary to complete a heterocyclic ring; R is alkyl having 1-4 carbons or a substituted alkyl group; Ar is phenyl or substituted phenyl; X is an acid radical; and n is 0 or 1, n being 0 when the compound forms an internal salt, the element being treated before or during the development with at least one aldehyde-type hardening agent. Preferably 20-400 mg of said compound is present per litre of developer. The aldehyde-type hardening agent may be present in a pre-hardening solution or in the developer. The aldehyde hardening agent may be formaldehyde, glyoxal, glutaraldehyde or dimethylol urea (forms aldehyde groups in solution). Many examples of the compounds of the above formula are given. These compounds reduce fog caused by processing the said elements in solutions containing an aldehyde hardening agent without appreciably reducing the developing speed and the sensitivity of the emulsion.
