Abstract

936,609. Photographic physical development. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. N.V. Oct. 8, 1959 [Oct. 11, 1958], No. 34155/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 98 (2). A metal germ image which has been obtained from a photo-sensitive compound either (a) directly by exposure to light or (b) by exposure followed by an after-treatment, is developed in a physical developer containing an ionic surfaceactive agent as stabilizer. The metal germ image may be formed directly by exposure of a photographic silver halide emulsion, or by exposure of a light-sensitive diazonium compound, diazosulphonate or diazocyanide, followed by after-treatment, e.g. with an aqueous solution of mercurous nitrate and nitric acid, or with an aqueous solution of silver nitrate, acetic acid and sodium acetate. The surface-active agent may be cationic, anionic or amphoteric. Compounds specified are salts of primary alkylamines having an alkyl group of at least 8 carbon atoms, the methyl sulphate of polyvinyl imidazole and various compounds mentioned by trade names which compounds are salts of primary or tertiary amines, salts of pyridine, morpholine or iminazoline, alkyl-aryl sulphonates or sulphates of aliphatic alcohols. The physical developers may contain, as reducing agent, hydroquinone, pyrocateohol, pyrogallol, gallic acid, ascorbic acid, o- or p-aminophenol, metal, N-p-hydroxyphenyl-glycine, o- or pphenylene diamine, N,N-diethyl-p-phenylene diamine, 1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidone or inorganic compounds containing ferrous, titanous or vanadous ions which may be present as complexes, e.g. the ferrous-oxalate complex. The physical developers may contain water-soluble salts of silver, mercury or gold, and they may be in acid, alkaline or neutral solution, for which purpose citric acid, nitric acid, lactic acid, oxalic acid, sodium sulphite or borax may be added. In certain of the examples the developer contains also potassium thiocyanate. In Example XVII, a photosensitive material sensitized with an aqueous solution containing mercuric chloride, ferric ammonium oxalate and ammonium oxalate is used. Specifications 690,094, 690,212, 717,915 and 737,874 are referred to.
