Abstract

873,198. Photographic developers. KODAK Ltd. July 30, 1957 [Aug. 3, 1956], No. 24078/57. Class 98(2) Photographic black-and-white silver halide developers contain as fog inhibitor a 4-carboxythiazolidine compound of the formula:- wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl, and R 1 is hydrogen or a watersoluble salt-forming group or atom such as alkali metal, ammonium or organic amine. R may be an alkyl group of 1-6 carbon atoms, phenyl, hydroxyphenyl, chlorophenyl, methoxyphenyl, nitrophenyl or diethylaminophenyl. The developing agent may be hydroquinone, catechol, pyrogallol, N-methylaminophenol or N-ethylaminophenol. In an example, an aqueous developer comprises 4-carboxy-2 (-pchlorophenyl) thiazolidine or 4-carboxy-2 (-m - nitrophenyl) thiazolidine, N- methyl-p-aminophenol sulphate, hydroquinone, sodium hexametaphosphate, sulphite, carbonate, bromide and iodide. The developers are particularly useful for the first development of multilayer colour materials which are intended for reversal by subsequent exposure and colour development.
