Abstract

658,575. Photographic developers. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORPORATION. May 27, 1949, No. 14279. Convention date, July 9, 1948. [Class 98 (ii)] An alkaline photographic developer for silver halide emulsions comprises a developing agent and a phenoxyalkylamine of one of the general formula wherein R and R 1 are H or methyl, R being H when R 1 is methyl and R 1 being H when R is methyl, n is 2 or 3, and X is H, nitro, or halogen, or a salt of such an amine. The amine increases the development rate and energizes weak developers to an extent that no second exposure is necessary for reversal development. Compounds specified are #-phenoxyethylamine, γ-phenoxypropylamine, #-phenoxy-α-methylethylamine, # - phenoxypropylamine, # - (4 - bromophenoxy) - ethylamine, # - (4 - nitrophenoxy) - ethylamine, and γ - (4 - chlorophenoxy)-propylamine. Examples are given of a black-and-white developer and of colour developers including sodium hexametaphosphate, p - amino - di - (# - hydroxyethyl) - aniline, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, and #-(4-bromophenoxy)-ethylamine and including sodium hexametaphosphate, 4 - amino - N - ethyl : N - # - hydroxyethylaniline sulphate, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, and either γ-(4-chlorophenoxy) propylamine or #-phenoxyethylamine.
