Abstract
760,972. Spray-producers. BREINL, J. C., and MAGYAR, F. March 24, 1954 [March 27, 1953], No. 8635/54. Class 69 (3). A whirl-type spray nozzle 10 has a circulation chamber confined by end walls, at least one of which has an axial outlet 16, and by a peripheral wall having a quadrangular tangential inlet 14 of a height substantially equal to that of the peripheral wall. The inlet has a maximum width not larger than <SP>2</SP>/ 9 of the largest radius of the chamber, and the inner surface of the top wall 22, Fig. 2, of the chamber slopes towards its outlet and liquid flows in substantially logarithmic spiral streamlines from the inlet to the outlet. A similar outlet may be provided in the opposite wall. In Fig. 6 a plate 26 is secured to the nozzle wall at its inlet and bear's against the end of a screw 30; by adjusting the screw the inlet width may be varied. The nozzle of Fig. 7 has means for varying the inlet height whilst maintaining a constant inlet width. A circulation chamber 46 with a base plate 50 is secured within a casing 40 by screws and has a tangential inlet, not shown, and an outlet 44. A plate 521 is slidably mounted in the chamber and is engaged by the end 62 of a threaded shaft 60. The effective height of the chamber and the inlet is varied by turning the shaft hand wheel 66. Liquid is fed to the nozzle from a pipe 42. The nozzle of Figs. 10 to 12 may be used in fire extinguishing and has means for delivering a solid jet and a spray simultaneously or successively, and includes a tube 96 to which is threaded a tube 78 on which is threaded a tube 84. A solid jet outlet tube 80 is secured to the tube 78 and has a conical part which may engage a valve needle 72 secured by a spider to the tube 96. The open position for a solid jet is shown in Fig. 10 and the closed position in Fig. 11. Within a tube 82 secured to the tube 84 is mounted a circulation chamber 101 having an inlet 96<SP>1</SP>, a bottom opening which snugly engages the tube 80, and an outlet larger than the tube 80 in a top plate 86. A bevelled surface of a flange 90 matches a surface 94 on the tube 80, whereby by turning tube 84 on tube 78 the flow of liquid to the circulation chamber is varied.
