760,962. Respiratory appliances. ABREY, M., and ABREY & GERATT, Ltd. April 15, 1955 [Jan. 15, 1954], No. 1308/54. Class 81(2) A pumping mechanism, for use with a cuirass or similar appliance, has adjustable means for limiting the degree of suction and pressure at each stroke. A bellows comprising upper and lower diaphragms 17, 19 and a corrugated flexible cylinder 16 is actuated by a connecting rod 14 working on a pivoted guide rod 40. Mounted in the top diaphragm 17 is a device 50 comprising an internal cylinder mounted on a spindle 60 for rotation within a fixed cylinder, the two cylinders having apertures which may be moved into or out of registry, to adjust their effective area, by turning the control knob 61. Two such devices are provided which are similar except for one 51 being provided with a flexible inlet valve 68 while the other is provided with a similar outlet valve 63. These devices allow a controllable amount of air to enter or escape from the bellows at each stroke and thereby limit the maximum suction and pressure. The bellows is driven by an electric motor through a variable ratio belt drive and a reduction gear box. In a modification the adjustable aperture devices and a pressure gauge are built into a container which can be connected into the pipe line between a cuirass and an existing pumping unit.
