Abstract

1,001,208. Flexible tube pumps. DISTILLERS CO. Ltd. Sept. 6, 1963 [Sept. 29, 1962], No. 37007/62. Heading F1F. A flexible tube pump comprising a tube 1 which may be made of natural or synthetic rubber, e.g., silicone rubber or material under the Registered Trade Mark "Tygon" which withstands heat sterilization techniques, is intermittently compressed between a leaf spring 6 acted upon by an electrically or mechanically-operated rotatable eccentrically mounted wheel 4 and an adjustable pressure plate 9. The pump includes fluid-pressure operated inlet and outlet valve assemblies operable in phase with the intermittent compression of the tube. Each valve assembly comprises a valve plate 16 loaded by a weight 17. In operation, when pressure of the fluid in the inlet passage 18 is greater than in the tube 1, the fluid lifts the inlet valve plate against its weight to enter the tube 1, the outlet valve at this stage remaining closed: On the tube being compressed to decrease its internal volume and increase the pressure therein, the inlet valve closes and the outlet valve opens. The pump delivery may be adjusted by a knurled screw 10 or by varying the rotational speed of the wheel 4. The tube is never completed flattened. In a modification, the tube may be of non-elastic material and be both compressed and expanded by a reciprocating piston rigidly attached thereto.
