663,963. Reciprocating pumps. COZZOLI, F. J. June 10, 1949 [Nov. 26, 1948], No. 15537/49. Class 102 (i) (i) A machine for filling ampules comprises a variable stroke piston pump 24 which delivers liquid in measured quantities to a filling needle 45 and has valve means 26, controlling suction and delivery, which maintains the delivery passage open until after the suction stroke has commenced in order to prevent drip. The pump comprises a bucket 24a connected to a valve body 25 pivoted on a shaft 28, and a cylinder 24b slidable over the bucket and detachably connected to a yoke member 20 which is adjustably clamped to an arcuate actuating lever 19. The latter is secured to and oscillated by a rocking shaft 18 driven through a link 17, connecting rod 15 and crank member 14 by a variable-speed geared motor 13 having a graduated speed adjuster 13b. The pump stroke is varied by adjusting the position of the yoke 20 on the calibrated lever 19 which at its upper limit, corresponding to the end of delivery, is concentric with the pivotal axis on the bucket so that the cylinder always reaches the same upper limit. A valve slide plate 27 is actuated through a link 32 and lever 51 by a roller 50 engaging an axial cam groove on the crank member. The needle is connected to the valve outlet nipple 41 by a flexible pipe 42. The valve and pump unit are readily dismantled from the machine for cleaning A shroud 24e prevents dirt entering the cylinder.
