Abstract

764,589. Respiratory appliances. CONITECH, Ltd. Sept. 29, 1953, No. 26700/53. Class 81(2) A pump, connected with an inflatable chest piece through a fluid passage, has control means, independent of the passage, for determining the limits of vacuum and pressure which are applied to the patient. The pump is preferably of the bellows type, comprising a top plate 22, a piston 24 and a connecting bellows 36. The piston slides on a hollow tube 58, and is oscillated by a connecting rod 68 connected to a crank 74 which is driven through a reduction gearing 80 by an electric motor. An aperture in the upper plate 22 has provision for connection with a hose leading to the chest piece. In order to limit the degree of vacuum, air may be admitted to the interior of the pump through holes 190, the interior of the tube 58, a controllable port 171 and a duct 186. The effective size of the port 171 is varied by turning a control knob 174 and thereby rotating a suitably shaped body member 184. The expulsion of air from the interior of the bellows, to limit the positive pressure, is controlled by a light disc valve, arranged to close during each suction stroke but which, during the pressure strokes, opens to an extent determined by an adjustable stop mounted above it (see Fig. 4, not shown). If desired, stand-by manual means may be provided for actuating the pump.
