The valve box of the respiratory apparatus described in Specification 802,141 comprises a casing 10 connected at one end to the pump cylinder and at the other to the cuirass applied to the patient's chest and having wall apertures fitted with adjustable valves the setting of which determine the maximum and minimum pressure attainable in the box. The maximum pressure is determined by a valve comprising a fixed disc 16 secured in one of the apertures, a disc 32 of expanded rubber, and a rigid disc 26 fast on a spindle 20 in threaded engagement with the disc 16, the disc 26 being surmounted by a collar 30 and a hand wheel (not shown) on the spindle. During the pressure stroke of the pump, air may escape from the box through a ring of ports in the disc 16 and past the edge of the disc 32, the amount escaping depending upon the position of the spindle which is adjusted by the hand wheel. During the suction stroke of the pump, air may be admitted to the valve box through a valve comprising a disc 18 secured in the other aperture in the box, a rigid disc 28 fast on the valve spindle 22 and a disc 34 of expanded rubber which covers the ring of ports in the disc 18. The amount of air entering the box depends upon the adjustment of the valve spindle carrying the disc 28.
