Abstract

1,187,461. Respiratory apparatus. P. J. O'KEEFFE. 14 Sept., 1967 [24 Oct., 1966], No. 41969/67. Heading A5T. [Also in Division F2] A valve for use in artificial respiration apparatus and operable in response to pressures at a gas supply inlet, a gas outlet to the patient and an exhaust outlet to atmosphere, to interconnect the gas outlet with the exhaust outlet and with the gas inlet alternatively, comprises a valve body having a large bore portion 47 communicating with the gas outlet 49 and exhaust openings 50 and a small bore portion 55 communicating with the gas inlet (45) and the outlet 49 in which bore portions a large diameter portion 69, 70 and a small diameter portion 72 of a piston are reciprocable, respectively, an expiration valve (58, 59) being located in the exhaust outlet and adjustable magnets 80, 88 co-operating with magnetic members 69, 73 at each end of the piston for urging the piston towards its extreme positions of movement. With the piston held in the position for interconnecting the inlet (45, Fig. 7) with the outlet 49 via a chamber 56 and the small bore portion 55, by interaction between one magnet 80 and a magnetic member 73, the large diameter portion of the piston prevents communication between the outlet duct 49 and exhalation apertures 50 and inhalation may be induced. As pressure builds up in the patients lungs and the outlet 49 the piston is moved so that the interaction between the other magnet 88 and magnetic member 69 is increased and the piston "snaps over" to its other extreme position so that the small diameter portion of the piston disconnects the gas inlet (45) from the outlet which is then put in communication with the exhalation apertures 50 thus permitting exhalation. Reduced pressure in the outlet (45) at the end of exhalation causes further reversal of the piston under the influence of magnet 80 and magnetic member 73 for commencement of the next inhalation. The distances between the magnets 80, 88 and their associated magnetic members 69, 73 are adjustable for predetermining the pressures at which inhalation and exhalation are terminated. The expiration valve comprises a fibre water valve element (58 Fig. 9) which may be adjustably spring loaded.-The respiratory valve may be combined with a pressure reducer (Figs. 2-5) and a nebuliser..(Figs. 11 and 12).
