Abstract

[Also in Division A5] Breathing apparatus comprises a multi-way diaphragm valve indicated generally at 2 connected to a mask 1 for enabling expiration to the atmosphere via non-return valve 9 and inspiration through conduit 3 of gas in a reservoir 4, an inhalation conduit 11 having a non-return valve 10, a regulator indicated generally at 12, and a tube 16 connected to the regulator having a fitting for coupling to a gas container. On inhalation, gas flows from the gas container via valves 15, 10, and 5 to the mask and on exhalation, exhaled gases pass via valves 5 and 9 to ambience. For purposes of artificial respiration, reservoir 4, which may be a rubber bag, is compressed to force the gas to be breathed into the lungs, the bag being re-filled with gas via non-return valve 10. The regulator comprises a housing 22 spanned by a diaphragm 13 having a lever 14 connected to plunger 30 of valve 15 abutting its central portion 29. A sub-pressure in conduit 11 causes the diaphragm 13 to be displaced inwardly of chamber 24 against the action of spring 35 so that the lever 14 depresses the plunger 30 to open valve 15. The regulator also comprises a relief valve 32, 33 which ensures that gas pressure in conduit 11 never rises above a predetermined maximum value.
