Abstract
1366499 Valves UNIVERSITA KARLOVA 6 Dec 1971 [8 Dec 1970] 56427/71 Heading F2V [Also in Divisions A5 and G3] A device for controlling the supply of gas to a patient may operate in a mode such as to enable the gas to be inhaled and exhaled by the patient unaided or in a mode to assist or induce inhalation of the gas. The device comprises a housing having first and second compartments A, B separated by a diaphragm 2 incorporating a one-way vent-valve 3. The first compartment A communicates with the atmosphere via openings 12 and the second compartment B interconnects a mouth piece 1 and a gas supply valve. This gas supply valve comprises a valve element 7 connected to a valve casing by a secondary diaphragm 6, the valve casing being thereby divided into first and second chambers a, b which are interconnected by a small orifice 11 in the valve element. The first and second valve-casing chambers communicate with the second compartment of the housing via openings 5 and 8 respectively, the opening 5 being closable by one end of a pivoted lever 4. The geometry of the valve is such that when the opening 5 is occluded the valve element is forced against its seat and shuts off the flow of gas from conduit 10, whilst when the opening 5 is not occluded the valve element unseats and gas flows freely into the second compartment B of the housing. A patient inhaling through mouthpiece 1 causes the diaphragm to move the lever 4, against the compression spring 9, and uncover opening 5, which in turn causes the valve element 7 to unseat and admit gas to the patient's lungs. When the patient exhales the diaphragm 2 ceases to act on the lever 4, the compression spring 9 closes the opening 5 and gas flow stops; the exhaled gases escaping via the one-way vent valve 3. A solenoid operated plunger, activated by a pulse generator 16 may engage the diaphragm and move it to the inhale position, simultaneously holding the vent valve 3 closed and opening the gas supply valve to cause gas under pressure to enter the lungs. The pulse generator 16 may be triggered either by a time switch 17, to induce inhalation, or by a flow responsive device 18 to assist breathing.
