Abstract

1,166,749. Respiratory apparatus. J. E. FINAN. 31 Aug., 1967 [12 Oct., 1966], No.: 39q76/67 Heading A5T. [Also in Division 'F2]' . Apparatus for supplying oxygen for breathing in response to an inhalation of a patient includes an on-off valve 23dd in a conduit 22a, 23f, 23g, 22b, leading from an oxygen supply. .(20) ,to the patient's mouth or nose, the valve being actuated in response to a change in the girth of the patient and including a piston 23kk which moves in a chamber 23v attached to a movable portion of the valve. As described, the valve is included in a body belt 29 which, as shown, is contracting while the patient exhales so that the valve 23dd in the oxygen supply line is closed. As the patient inhales, the body belt 29 expands and one end 23ww: of-the; belt moves the piston 23kk on a piston rod 23mm to the right so that a low pressure space is formed to the left of the piston within the chamber 23v. The low pressure causes the chamber 23v to move to the right against the compression springs 23hh, 23ff (as in Figure 5, not shown) so that the valve 23dd in the oxygen supply opens. When the patient begins to exhale again, the belt contracts and the valve 23dd closes. The valve arrangement also includes an adjustable air vent 23x into the chamber 23v and (Figure 7, not shown) the piston 23kk is 'joined to the piston rod 23mm by a one-way -valve which allows air to pass from the left to the right of the piston when the'belt is contracting. The piston is of self-lubricating material (e.g, nylon or a graphite filled body) and the chamber 23v slides over adjustably spring loaded nylon bearing members 23ii The oxygen is applied to the nose (e.g. through a cannula (24) or mouth of the patient while air is taken in through 'the mouth or nose respectively. In an embodiment, Figures 9-12 (not shown), the piston and chamber (23kk<SP>1</SP>, 23v<SP>1</SP>)- are of circular ,rather rectangular crosssection and the oxygen control valve (23dd<SP>1</SP>) is not secured to the chamber but is spring biassed to the open position and is closed by contact with the chamber as it moves to the , left on exhalation.
