Abstract

1,053,704. Artificial respiration apparatus. O. H. DRAGER, [trading as DRAGERWERK HEINR. & BERNH, DRAGER], May 11, 1964, No. 19587/64. Heading A5T. [Also in Division F2] A control valve for artificial respiration apparatus which operates in response to the patient's attempts to breathe comprises a valve housing 1 with a first port 16 connected to the patient, second and third ports 13, 14 connected to sources of positive and negative pressure, respectively, and a fourth port 12 connected to atmosphere, the valve member being piased into a position in which it closes the second and third ports and opens the fourth port and being movable into positions for permitting inhalation and exhalation in which it closes two of the second, third and fourth ports. The bias is provided by an iron core 8 in the valve member which is attracted by a permanent magnet 9 in the housing or by springs (not shown). When the valve member is in the position determined by the bias, a space 2a in the housing communicates with atmosphere through a vent 30 and a slot 10 in the valve member which is hollow and a port 12, and a space 15 communicating with the patient through the port 16 is closed. When the patient attempts to inhale, the reduction in pressure in the space 15 pivots the valve member about its pivot 5 in one direction to the inhalation position in which the slot 10 registers with the positive pressure port 13 so that gas passes to the patient through slots 10, 11 in the valve member and the space 15, and to the space 2a. On exhalation, the rise in pressure in the space 15 causes the valve member to pivot in the opposite direction into the exhalation position, so that communication via slots 10, 11 is established between the negative pressure port 14 and the spaces 15, 2a. Alternatively, the valve member is a spool valve (Fig. 5, not shown) which is reciprocated between the inhalation and exhalation positions by two electromagnets which are energised in response to the patient's attempts to inhale and exhale respectively, the valve being biassed by a spring.
