Abstract
1,207,661. Resuscitators. E. GARDEN. 11 Dec., 1967 [27 Oct., 1966; 9 Dec., 1966], Nos. 48218/66 and 55131/66. Heading A5T. A lung ventilator comprises a body 11 having a gas inlet 13 for connection to anaesthetic equipment, a breathing connection 15 to the patient and an outlet 12 to atmosphere, a valve member 37 magnetically biassed to a rest position where it closes the gas inlet and opens the breathing connection to the outlet and which in use is displaced from its rest position by build-up of pressure at the inlet to open the breathing connection to the outlet, the valve member returning to its rest position for expiration as pressure at the inlet dissipates. A spool-type valve member 37 comprises a hub 38 supporting discs 39, 40 which close against one of the seats formed by internal shoulders 20, 21 in the outlet 12 and inlet 13, respectively. A magnet 42 in the hub is in attracting relationship with a magnet 27 supported by an axially adjustable web 26 in the inlet to bias the valve to its rest position. The magnet 42 is in repelling relationship with a magnet 23 arranged axially in the outlet for urging the valve into its rest position when the outlet is wholly or partially closed. The web 26 and the magnet 27 are adjusted by a screw 32 which abuts an inclined surface 34 on the web. The magnet 23 is adjustably threaded on a web 22 in the outlet. In an alternative construction, the valve body has a pressure relief valve (90) Figure 2 not shown, the valve seat (62) in the outlet is adjustable and the magnet (68) in the inlet is carried by a plug (67) which is urged by the spool valve (85) by a spring (70) and may be used to press the spool valve (85) against the seat (62) to provide permanent communication between the inlet and the patient. Soft iron rod may be used instead of one of the magnets in each attracting pair.
