[Also in Group XXV] A fastening device for a container 4 comprises an angle-shaped bar 1 having one limb 3 adapted to lie over the outer face of a lid 5 or the like of the container and another limb 2 adapted to lie along an adjoining wall 4<SP>1</SP>, the latter limb being bent outwardly and having a slot 15 receiving a clamping screw 7. The slot in the limb 2 is elongated. The limb 3 has prongs 6 at its free end which engage the lid 5. As shown in Fig. 2 the screw 7 has a conical head 7b which is either provided with a screwdriver slot or is extended to form a hexagon for engagement by a spanner ; adjacent the head is an unthreaded part of the shank which terminates in a threaded portion. The threaded end of the screw engages a boss 8<SP>1</SP> on a plate 8 which is connected to the inside of the wall 4<SP>1</SP> by rivets 9, the rivets also serving to secure to the other side of the wall a plate 10, through an aperture in which the screw passes. Initially bent up lugs are provided on each side of the aperture in the plate 10 so that when the shank of the screw has been passed through the slot 15 in the bar 1 and through the aperture in the plate 10 the lugs can be bent down to secure the screw and bar to the container since the threaded part of the screw is then too large to pass through the remaining aperture. The unthreaded part of the stem of the screw can move freely in the aperture in the plate 10 and allows the bar 1 to be tilted back to free the lid. The slot 15 in the bar 1 is provided with countersunk holes at each end and when the head of the screw is in the upper countersunk hole and the screw is tightened in the boss 8<SP>1</SP>, the limb 3 of the bar 1 engages the lid 5 and secures it to the wall 4<SP>1</SP>. A lug 18 is provided on the plate 10 and in the fastening position of the bar 1 this projects through an aperture 19 in the limb 2 so that a sealing wire can be passed through a hole in the lug. In a modification, Fig. 6, the slot 15 in the limb 2 has a circular enlargement 26 at its upper end to receive a collar 23 on the screw shank. The collar has a countersink to take the head of the screw and has an eccentrically positioned cylindrical boss 23a on its underside which is received in the enlargement 26 in the limb 2. In this construction when the screw has been tightened in a threaded boss of a plate fixed to the inside of the container wall the collar can be rotated and the engagement of the boss 23a with the enlargement 26 forces the limb 3 of the bar 1 into engagement with the lid. The periphery of the collar is hexagonal or serrated so that it can be easily rotated.
