[Also in Groups XXI and XXX] Sludge removed from a sludge-drying bed 10 by apparatus carried on a carriage 20 running on a travelling gantry 14 is delivered to a hopper 41 from which it is unloaded when the gantry is at one end of the bed as shown in Fig. 2. Pairs of beds 10 are disposed end to end so that the gantry 14 may travel from one bed of a pair to another across a carriage 47 which can be moved on rails 48 to carry the gantry 14 to positions opposite similar pairs of beds. The track-way for the carriage 47 also serves as a loading bay for vehicles into which the sludge is discharged through a shoot 42 below the hopper 41 and a similar bay 45 is provided at one side of the pairs of beds. The hopper 41 may be arranged centrally over the gantry with an elevator on each side for digging in each direction of travel. The gantry is then arranged to pass over the end walls so that the hopper may discharge centrally over the loading track. The sludge may be raised by apparatus similar to that described in Specifications 723,651 and 723,709 and the jib 22 carrying the sludge lifting apparatus can be raised by a cable 35 to clear the walls of the sludge beds. The return travel of a gantry 14 may be faster than its digging travel. The drives to the gantry, to the carriage 20, and to the sludge lifting apparatus are from independent electric motors driven from a generator which may be carried by the gantry or may be mounted on a fixed part of the beds and connected with the gantry and carriage by trailing cables.
