Apparatus for discharging ships comprises a pair of contra-rotating endless elevating bucket conveyers 1 discharging down shoots 24 on to an endless conveyer 2 arranged therebetween and extending laterally thereof. The conveyers 1 are fed by bucket wheels 7 or endless bucket conveyers (27) Fig. 6 (not shown) driven by motors (21) Fig. 5 (not shown) and are pivotally mounted on the conveyer 2 for movement by an hydraulic actuator 5. The conveyer 2 has its discharge end 10 movable along a slot 9 for discharge on to a conveyer 3 and has its other end adjustably suspended by a cable coupled to a winch 4 mounted on a gantry 6. In an alternative embodiment Fig 4 (not shown) an endless conveyer 20 is arranged between the conveyers 2 and 3. In a further embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown) the conveyers (1), (2) are suspended from the derricks (17) of a ship (29) to transfer material between ships. The discharge end of the conveyer (2) then being fitted with one or more rotary distributing units (18). The gantry 6 is also equipped with a jib 13 along which a carriage 15 may travel for the trans-shipment of containers 28. The lowering of the elevating conveyers 1 into the ship etc. may be controlled by means which sense the current consumption of the motors 21 or by sensors 25. The elevating conveyers 1 may be replaced by screw conveyers.
