An apparatus for roughening road and like surfaces by chipping them by heating, comprises a frame 2 carried on a back strut and wheel 6, and having burners 9 arranged on burner heads 8. The heads are articulated to links 10 for free movement and are carried on supports 12 so that they lie parallel with the ground surface. The burner gases are fed through a pipe 18, mainfold 17 and distributing pipes 16. In a modification, the burner heads are independently mounted on pillars and are biased to the ground by compression springs.
