[Class 107] In an apparatus for heating or drying road or other surfaces wherein a firegrate or heater mounted on a trolley may be lowered into proximity with the surface to be treated, the firegrate or heater is mounted in the frame in a pivotal manner under the control of an operating lever and is arranged to be lifted over a dead centre position so that it will not be inadvertently lowered. As shown, a firegrate e is supported on the frame a by links g, g<SP>1</SP> and may be lowered to working position by operating a lever i pivoted at a<SP>1</SP>, the link g<SP>1</SP> then resting on a transverse member of the frame a. In raising the firegrate to the inoperative position shown, the firegrate passes over the dead centre position and the operating lever i comes to rest against a stop j.
