Abstract

965,095. Drying paper. H. L. SMITH. Feb. 13, 1961 [Oct. 25, 1960], No. 5194/61. Heading F4G. In apparatus for drying a continuous web of paper 11, Fig. 2, the web is conveyed about heated drying rolls 10 whilst also being heated by arcuate, vented radiant heaters 12 which are supplied with a fluid heated to approximately 600‹ F., concentrically mounted about the rolls and mounted so as to permit the passage of the vapours from the web to pass by convection both through the spaces 13 between the radiators and also through ducts 14 mounted in the space between the radiators and web. A hightensile strength, open-weave cloth may travel with the web to support and press it against the drying rolls. The heater 12 may have a central vent, Fig. 17 (not shown), permitting the passage of vapour from one side of the heater to the other or two heaters may be spaced from each other about each drying roll to define the vent between them. Vanes having reflective surfaces may be pivotally mounted between the heaters and web to reflect radiations from the web when desired. Release means, responsive to a break in the web move the heaters away from the rolls to prevent jamming of the sheet between the heaters and rolls, comprises sensing means 36, Fig. 13, formed of a counterbalanced plate 41 pivotally mounted on the heater to contact the web which operates, via a microswitch solenoid 40, to trip a spring-urged latch 38 pivotally mounted on a standard 35 engaging an arm 33 normally holding the heater 12 in spaced relation with the roll 10 to pivot the heater about a torque bar 32. A pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 60 and piston rod 61 is connected to the arm 33 to return the heater to its operative position.
