Abstract
759,052. Torque transmitting couplings. VICKERS - ARMSTRONGS ENGINEERS, Ltd. Oct. 25 1954 [Nov. 24, 1953], No. 32604/53. Class 80(2) Torque is transmitted between concentric members 1, 3 by fluid pressure in spaces 13 between longitudinally extending teeth 4, 8 fixed to the members 1, 3 respectively. The tips 9, 11 of the teeth closely fit the cylindrical faces 10, 12 of the members 1, 3. Fluid under pressure is delivered through radial ducts 15 to the tips of the teeth 4 and thence through recesses 16 to the spaces 13. The recesses 16 gradually increase in size from a position midway between adjacent teeth 8 so that when in use the pressure in a space 13 increases as the space decreases. The ends of the spaces 13 are sealed by rings 18, 19 fixed to the member 3 and ring 20 fixed to the member 1. The rings may have valve means to control leakage from the spaces 13. The teeth 4, 8 may be axial or helical. As shown in Fig. 3 the member 3 is a gear wheel with gear teeth 21.
