Abstract

917,521. Shaft couplings. YARROW & CO. Ltd. Feb. 19, 1959 [Nov. 19, 1957], No. 36044/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXII] A rotary coupling for attenuating periodic torque variations comprises two sets of flexible bellows 12, 12a mounted between adjacent pairs of vanes 69, 70. Vanes 69 are attached to a shaft 63 and vanes 70 are attached to a shaft 66. The bellows 12 are connected to a fluid vessel 13 by ducts 14, whilst bellows 12a are connected to a vessel 13a by ducts 14a. The bellows 12 are also connected to a circular groove 71 by ducts 72, the bellows 12a being connected to a groove 71a by ducts 72a. The bellows 12, 12a, grooves 71, 71a, and the ducts 72, 72a are filled with a liquid, cavities 13, 13a being gas-filled. The invention is applicable to ships' propeller shafts and diesel engine output shafts. The Specification also describes vibration dampers (see Group XXXII). A further construction of rotary coupling is described and illustrated in the Provisional Specification.
