Abstract

762,487. Torsional vibration dampers. HINDMARCH, T. Sept. 22, 1954 [Sept. 30, 1954], No. 26819/53. Class 108(3). [Also in Group XXIX] Torsional vibrations or cyclic variations are eliminated in a hydraulic coupling by valves which allow flow through the coupling only when the pressure of the hydraulic liquid is above or below a predetermined range. When the pressure is within the range the coupling is locked. The coupling is of the gear wheel type having an internally toothed member 5 secured to a casing 2 carried by the driving shaft 1 and planet gears 6 carried by a part 9 connected to the driven shaft 4. Passages 10, 11 extend from the suction and pressure sides of the gears 6 and valve means 12 (shown only diagrammatically in Fig. 1), is provided in the passage 10. Valve means may be provided in both passages 10 and 11 if torque is to be transmitted in both directions of rotation. Fig. 4 shows, in more detail, the construction of the valve 12. When the passage 10 is subject to pressure, the valve 15 moves to compress a spring 16 and restrict the flow through ducts 18, 19 and eventually cuts off the flow. A further rise in pressure moves the valve to compress a spring 17 and re-establishes the connection between ducts 18, 19 and relieves the pressure. Specification 602,586 [Group XXIX], is referred to.
