Abstract
758,133. Tubular heat exchangers. REAVELL, J. A. April 1, 1955 [May 3, 1954], No. 12789/54. Class 64(3). A heat exchanger comprises a shell surrounding a bundle of tubes 13 adjacent ends of which are mounted in a pair of tube plates 14, 15 parallel to each other and spaced apart and carried by the shell which has one or more apertures 18 between the tube plates, the shell being welded e.g. at 22, 23 and 24 to both tube plates and being made in separate parts 10 and 11 connected by a joint (e.g. a welded joint 16) located at the inner side of the tube plate 14. The apparatus shown may be used for the cooling of milk or fruit juice flowing through the tubes by means of ammonia gas flowing through the shell and over the tubes, the arrangement being such that any gas leaking past the tube plate 14 will pass to the atmosphere through apertures 18 and can therefore be detected. The tubes 13 are preferably made of stainless steel, the tube plate 15 being made of stainless or other high chromium steel or nickel. The tube plate 14 which is thicker than the tube plate 15 is preferably made of rolled steel plate.
