A protective insole resistant to nails and the like penetrating the sole comprises a thin, resilient, flexible and imperforate metal plate 1, preferably of spring steel, which is flat except for a recess 2 at the heel end and is covered, at least on one side, with a layer of non-metallic material 3, such as rubber, plastic or fabric. The plate may be embedded in the material or may be inserted through an opening along the side. A protective toe cover 4 may be provided having flanges 4a between which the plate fits.
