An hydraulic buffer comprises a piston member 22 working in a cylinder 21 provided with apertures 32-37 through which the fluid passes to the reservoir 15, the resistance to compression of the buffer increasing progressively as the piston blanks off the apertures. To prevent excessive pressure build-up in the cylinder a relief valve 44, which is controlled by the pilot valve 46, is provided to vent the fluid in the cylinder to the reservoir 15. The relief valve may be of the sleeve type and mounted axially of the buffer.
