Abstract

879,778. Vehicle buffers. DOWTY HYDRAULIC UNITS Ltd. April 27, 1959 [April 25, 1958], No. 13256/58. Addition to 756,250. Class 103(5). A buffer plunger 15 under buff load forces hydraulic fluid from the bore 11 of a cylinder 5 through axially spaced progressively closable holes such as 8, 9 into a reservoir 12, and comprises a peripheral recess 27 communicating via holes 28 with the reservoir, an outstop flange 20 which may abut a flange 23 held in place in the cylinder by a circlip 24, bearing surfaces 16, 17 chamfered at 25, 26, and a rubber sealing member 19 contained in a groove 18 and provided with a nylon backing ring 21. The bearings 16, 17 are bathed in the fluid, but the holes 28 ensure that the sealing .ring 19 is subjected only to the pressure in the reservoir 12.
