Abstract
888,878. Railway vehicle buffers. DOWTY HYDRAULIC UNITS Ltd. Dec. 18, 1959 [Sept. 25, 1958], No. 30727/58. Class 103(5). A railway vehicle buffer comprises a spring 21 having a rising load/travel characteristic A, and a piston and, cylinder 12, 8 which upon buffer compression displaces liquid into a reservoir 17 through orifices such as 15 whose effective area falls during compression, wherein the rate at which the effective area falls during compression is so reduced that for a specified vehicle weight and maximum permissible velocity of impact, the resistance provided by the orifices has a falling load/travel characteristic B which added to the spring characteristic A provides a substantially uniform characteristic C. To achieve this the velocity of the plunger 3 should fall uniformly from the moment of impact, and the flow of liquid displaced by the piston from the cylinder should also fall uniformly. The orifices 15 should be either uniformly spaced and increase progressively in hole size towards the headstock 1, or should be of the same hole size but spaced progressively closer together as shown. A split ring 5 sliding in a bore 6 provides an inner bearing for the plunger 3 and an extension limit stop.
