Abstract

1,072,495. Shock absorbers. GEORGE ANGUS & CO. May 21, 1965 [May 25, 1964], No. 21577/65. Heading F2S. A piston-type shock absorber comprises a resilient buffer 5 of cellular material, e.g. a polyurethane, through a bore 6 in which a piston rod 3 extends. At least part of the well of the bore is in contact with the piston rod. This part of the wall is of an open cellular structure the pores 7 of which are filled with a lubricant such that compression of the buffer causes lubrication of the piston rod to facilitate its sliding with respect to the buffer. The part of the wall of the bore of the buffer may be provided with annular grooves (Fig. 2, not shown). The surface of the buffer 5 other than that part in contact with the piston rod is of a closed cellular structure produced by, for example, coating the surface with a homogeneous resilient surface layer.
