Abstract
755,704. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. DEWRANCE & CO., Ltd. Oct. 11, 1954 [Oct. 9, 1953], No. 29216/54. Class 135. A spring-loaded safety valve is opened by the pressure within a space coaxial with the valve spindle 18 and sealed at its ends by flexible parts connected with the valve spindle, the pressure within the space being controlled by a pressure-actuated auxiliary valve 41 and being limited to a maximum value which is low compared with the pressure of the controlled fluid. As shown the space comprises two chambers 6, 7 communicating with each other through an apertured web 10 in a hollow distance piece 16 separating the valve casing from the spring housing 14. The chamber 7 is sealed by a bellows 17 to the spindle 18 and the chamber 6 is similarly sealed by a diaphragm 4 clamped centrally between plates 5, 12 and peripherally between the housing 14 and the distance piece 16. The valve disc 2 co-operates with an inlet piece 1 and carries a piston-like member 30 working in a guide 3. The chambers 6, 7 are formed with ports 32, 33 closed by removable plugs. The compression of the loading spring 13 may be adjusted by a threaded member 22. The chambers 6, 7 are filled with liquid through a pipe 31 from an annular chamber 15 surrounding the spring 13. A pressure regulated by the auxiliary valve 41 is applied to the chamber 15 through a pipe 40. The outlet of the auxiliary valve 41 is also connected through an adjustable throttle 25 with a low-pressure discharge branch 24. The auxiliary valve which is loaded by a spring 27 and a weight 26 both acting through a lever is connected with the boiler drum or other source of pressure to be controlled by a line 23 containing a stop valve 28. The spring 13 is adjusted to exert a closing force somewhat in excess of the normal operating pressure of the valve but not above the safety limits of the apparatus to be protected. The throttle 25 is adjusted so that the pressure rise which takes place in the pipe 40 and therefore in the chambers 6, 7 when the normal operating pressure is reached and the auxiliary valve opens supplements the fluid pressure acting directly on the valve disc and so overcomes the spring 13.
