[Class 135] [Also in Group XXVI] A pressure-reducing valve of the type comprising a main valve 6 controlling the flow of fluid from an inlet 11 to an outlet 13 and balanced with respect to both inlet and outlet pressures, a pressure-responsive valve-actuating member, such as a piston 8, connected to the low pressure side of the valve and exposed on one side through a passage 58 to the outlet pressure which tends to move it in a direction to close the main valve and exposed on its other side to the pressure in a regulating chamber 9, a pilot valve 10 controlling a passage 27, 31 leading from the inlet 11 to the chamber 9, and a second pressure-responsive valve-actuating member, such as the diaphragm 35, connected to the low pressure side of the pilot valve and exposed on one side to the same pressure as that in the regulating chamber which tends to move it in a direction to close the pilot valve and acted upon on its other side by a static loading, such as the adjustable spring 44, is characterized in that the pilot valve is balanced with respect to the fluid pressures of the inlet and of the regulating chamber. For balancing purposes, valve 6 carries a piston 14 of which the diameter is equal to that of the seat of the valve ; the inlet fluid pressure acts in opposite directions against the inlet side of the valve closure member and the inside face of piston 14, and the outlet pressure acts in opposite directions against the outlet face of the valve closure member and, through a passage 20 and a chamber containing the valve loading spring 18, against the outer face of piston 14. Pilot 'valve 10 is balanced in a similar manner by a piston 32. The spindle 21 connecting valve 6 to piston 8 is coned to prevent the jet of pressure fluid flowing through the valve from impinging and exerting a pressure on the piston, and a yielding washer 57 is provided for the same purpose. A small leak is pro. vided between the two sides of piston 8. To prevent hunting, the piston is fitted with rubber rings 50 acting as friction brakes, but to prevent undue damping due to air entrapped between the rings during the initial insertion of the piston, ports 51 are provided to allow this air to leak away. Pistons 8, 14 and 32 could be substituted by diaphragms or bellows.
