Abstract
754,527. Pipe couplings. JEWELL, H. W. Dec. 6, 1954, No. 35314/54. Class 99(1). A pipe coupling comprises a resilient sleeve 10 clamped to the adjacent ends of the pipes 11, 12 by clamping bands 18 with each of which is associated a separate housing 13 enclosing a tightening means 15 for the band, the housings 13 being adapted to receive a sealing composition to surround the tightening means 15 and the ends of the bands 18. The sleeve 10, preferably of rubber, is formed with a flange 10a, Fig. 4, extending between the abutting ends of the pipes 11, 12, and also has integral therewith at each side a hollow rib 10b through which pass sheet metal bands 18, the ribs 10b being cut away beneath the housings 13 to expose the ends of the bands 18 which are connected to a screw-threaded plate 16a which is drawn upwards by a screwed bolt 15 to tighten the bands. The ends of the band 18 are looped over rods 17 in the plate 16a and are folded back into the ribs 10b. The sleeve 10 is surrounded by a stiffening band 19 which extends partly under the ribs 10b and is provided with tapering notches 19a into which the material of the sleeve 10 and ribs 10b is compressed when the bands 18 are tightened. Plates 14 closing the tops of the housings 13 are pivoted about the bolts 15 to permit the housings to be filled with a sealing compound such as cement, sulphursilica cement, or a resinous cementing composition after the bands 18 have been tightened. Alternatively the housings 13 may be filled with a sealing composition of the non-setting plastic type prior to assembly. The ribs 10b surrounding the bands 18 may be separate from the sleeve 10 and the stiffening band 19 surrounding the sleeve 10 may comprise a main part 19<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 8, of polyvinyl chloride the ends of which extend under the ends of the housings 13 and are overlapped by a bearing part 19<SP>11</SP> of stainless steel. In Fig. 8, the ends of the bands 18 are folded through slots in plate 23 carried by a nut 21 on the tightening bolt 22 and are gripped between the nut and the sloping side walls 20a of the housing 20 when the bands are tightened.
