[Also in Group XXIII] A device for gauging cylindrical bores during machining comprises a longitudinally split cylinder, part of which is resiliently connected to a support for the device enabling the diameter of the cylinder to be slightly reduced for introduction into a bore, the cylinder carrying feeler elements which contact the bore. The invention is described as applied to a cylinder internal grinder, the device being mounted on a shaft 9 for swinging into line with the workpiece 1. As the grinding wheel 4 is withdrawn prior to making the final cut, the cylinder 25 is introduced into the bore. The bore is now ground to its final size by the wheel 4 operating through the gap in the cylinder. The cylinder contacts the bore through feelers 26, 27 and as the bore diameter increases, expands, operating a known device 23 connected by a lead 24 either to an indicator (not shown) or to means for stopping the machine when the desired bore diameter is reached (also not shown). An alternative embodiment is described in which the cylinder 25 is in two parts and has an annulus secured to the end first entering the workpiece, the annulus being weakened along a chord to permit relative bending of the ports, one part being joined to the cylinder support 8 by a weakened element such as 31 and the other being rigid with the support.
