608,058. Linear-dimension gauges. JONES (MACHINE TOOLS), Ltd., E. H., and CITNER, H. Feb. 14, 1946, No. 4653. [Class 106 (ii)] A plug gauge for use with an indicator gauge comprises a bell-crank lever 3 pivoted by a blade spring 6 in a slot 2 penetrating the bore of a hollow cylinder 1, a stop 5 being provided to limit the movement of the lever. One arm of the lever 3 carries a tungsten carbide tip 4, while the other is acted upon by the opposing forces of a spring-pressed spindle 9, the outer end of which is connected by means not shown to an indicator gauge, and a spring-pressed ball 8 placed in the hollow of a screw 6, through which the differential pressure of the two springs can be adjusted. The ratio of the effective lengths of the arms of the lever 3 can be finely adjusted by a screw 14 carrying eccentrically a ball-bearing on the plane end 13 of the spindle 9 and can be fixed by a locking screw 15. Ring-like projections from edge to edge of the slot 2 may be formed near its ends or one may be formed with the tip 4 in its gap, and standing proud of the ring or rings. Axial or other projections may be used. To relieve the pressure on the tip 4 and increase sensitivity, auxilliary springs may be fitted in axial grooves either side of the slot 2 to press a tungsten carbide segment in a groove diametrically opposite the tip against the bore to be gauged.
