[Also in Group XX] Apparatus for controlling the movement of a web comprises reels for supplying or receiving the web and three loop-forming members arranged two on one side and one on the other side of the web so as to frictionally grip the web and exert on the web a force affecting the longitudinal motion of the web, the amount of the force being dependent upon the loop size. As shown in Fig. 1 a film 10 intermittently fed from a reel 12 by sprockets 14 is fed past rollers 22 to form a loop L. The film is then guided around studs 30, 32, which may be of aluminium, and a stud 34 preferably of rubber, to a receiving reel 16 which exerts a constant torque on the film. When the loop is large the film is free to move between the studs 30, 32, 34, but as the loop L decreases in size the film is drawn more tightly between the studs 30, 32, 34 so that the frictional force exerted thereby overcomes the torque applied by the reel 16. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 the film 10 is drawn off a reel 17 which exerts a constant torque on the film tending to prevent the feed. As the size of the loop diminishes the film is pressed against a rotating roller 31 so that the torque exerted by the reel 17 is overcome.
