754,410. Length-bars. SCHAERER & CO., AKT.-GES. Oct. 8, 1954 [Nov. 6, 1953], No. 29014/54. Class 106 (2). The measuring-element of a length bar for measuring dimensions of e.g. ten feet is supported by a supporting element under tensile stress to prevent sag. The measuring element 1 is supported in a tube 2 by rings 3, the tube 2 being heated on assembly so that tensile stress appears on cooling, the tube 2 being itself supported in a compression member 8 by rings 9. The stresses are transmitted from tube 2 to tube 8 by means of rings 6, 7 having relatively opposed spherical faces and held in position by threaded flanged sleeves 4, 5. The element 1 is located within the tube 2 by a disc 22 locked by a spring washer and subjected to the action of a spring 23. Extension pieces 19 may be added to the length-bar by means of a split mantle supporting sleeve 10 and a member 11 screwed thereto. The mantle 10 may slide over the outer tube 8 and be clamped thereto by clamping nuts 12, 15.
