In a labelling-machine the stack 9 of labels is contained by two side bars 4, two top bars, and two bottom bars, all the bars having front ledges or claws 11 against which the front label 12 is pressed by a pressure pad 13. The bars 4 are carried by side members 3 adjustable vertically on four columns 2 mounted on a base 1, and the top and bottom bars are carried by a bridge member and adjustable supports, respectively, mounted on the columns 2. A transverse lever 15 is pivoted at 14 to the pressure pad 13, and has a head portion 16 slidable along a bar 17 carried by one of the side members 3. A cord 22 is attached at 24 to the lever 15, passes around a pulley 23 mounted on the member 3 at one end, and then along the member 3 where it is attached to a drum 19 rotatably mounted at the other end of the member 3. The drum 19 contains a coiled spring and exerts tension on the cord 22 to urge the lever 15 and pressure pad 13 into contact with the end of the stack 9 of labels. In order that the front label 12 may be forced back slightly from the claws 11 to assist its removal from the pile by an adhesive separator, the head 16 of the lever 15 is a slack fit on the bar 17, and is cut away, as shown, on opposite sides to allow the lever and pad 13 to be rocked back about the head 16 as pivot. A knob 18 on the head 16 facilitates hand manipulation of the lever and pad when fresh labels are to be inserted in the stack 9. Where there are two or more stacks, they are arranged vertically staggered to allow replenishment thereof.
