Application October 21, 1939, Serial No. 300,672
Claims (Cl. 33-128) This invention relates to ribbons and other narrow fabrics and to yardage indicating means therefor.
One object of the invention is the provision of a ribbon or other narrow fabric winding or putup having means carried by the ribbon for indicating the quantity of ribbon in the winding or package. The yardage indicating means provided in accordance with the present invention not only enables the sales person to readily measure the quantity of ribbon in making sales from the winding or package but also provides convenient means for ascertaining the quantity of ribbon in a partially depleted winding or package whereby to facilitate the taking of inventory.
A further object of the invention is to provide yardage indicating means carried by the ribbon and yet readily removable therefrom without leaving marks on the ribbon or otherwise impairing the appearance thereof.
The above objects of the invention and other objects which might hereinafter appear will be fully understood from the following description considered with reference to the accompanying drawing which however is to be considered illustrative of the invention and not in limitation thereof.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a perspective View of a ribbon winding in 'a container, part of the ribbon being with- 9 drawn from the container, and part of the container being broken away for the purpose of illustrating the particular type of winding of the ribbon package;
Fig. 2 is a plan view on a larger scale of a piece of ribbon;
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the ribbon;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a ribbon put-up or spool and a part of the ribbon wound thereon and provided with the yardage indicating means of the present invention.
In Fig. l of the drawing I have illustrated the ribbon R as arranged in the form of a winding W of the type which permits the ribbon to be withdrawn from the container 0 without twisting the ribbon. A winding of the type here shown is illustrated and described in United States Letters Patent No. 2,082,489 granted June 1, 1937, on an an application filed by me. As explained in said Letters Patent the ribbon R can be withdrawn from its Winding in the container substantially free from twisting.
In accordance with the present invention provision is made for indicating the quantity of ribbon in the winding, in a full package or in a partially depleted package, and further to facilitate the measuring of the ribbon in the sale thereof. The yardage indicating means is carried directly by the ribbon, in readily separable or detachable relation therefrom, and is of such character that when removed from the ribbon no marks are left thereon, thus avoiding disfigurement or impairment of the appearance of the ribbon.
As here shown, the yardage indicating means comprises a plurality of individual and separate members l0 carried by the ribbon'in predetermined spaced relation longitudinally of the ribbon. Said members [0 are preferably composed of sheet material such thin paper, each member having imprinted thereon a number or other mark indicative of the quantity of the ribbon. The space between two members l0 may var but is preferably one-half yard in length. Members ID are preferably pointed, as shown, for indicating the line at which the ribbon is to be cut for separating the desired quantity thereof from the winding, This is illustrated in Fig. 2 where the line of cut |2--l'2 lies adjacent to the pointed end M of member I0. The total length of the winding is indicated by the member I 0 which is nearest to the free or outer end of the winding. Thus for example, when the total length of the winding is ten yards, the member ID shown in Fig. 2 carries the number 9% there being one-half yard of ribbon from the point Id of said member ID to the free .or outer end of the ribbon. In Fig. l the member ID at the outerend "5' of the ribbon indicates that there are 7% yards of ribbon remaining in the winding.
The yardage indicating members II] are individually detachable from the ribbon and are intended to be removed therefrom when the ribbon is sold, that is, said members are removed by the sales person at the time of sale from the portion of the winding which is sold. In order that members Ill may be securely fastened directly to the ribbon, in face to face relation therewith, and at the same time to permit said members to be readily peeled from the ribbon, a portion IE or each member extending between the pointed end l4 and the dotted indicating line 20 is coated with a thin film of a suitable adhesive, preferably a peelable adhesive of the thermo-plastic pressure sensitive or other type, the coated side of member 10 being in contact with the adjacent surface of the ribbon. This leaves a tab portion 22 which is free from adhesive and free from direct attachment to the ribbon to provide means for grasping members ID for facilitating removing the same from the ribbon. The peelable adhesive does not penetrate the fibers of the ribbon threads and remains entirely on the surface of members If) when the latter are removed, peeling off from the ribbon with said members, so that the ribbon from which said members are removed are free from any disfiguring marks.
It will be understood that the yardage indicating members may be used with any type of ribbon winding or put-up. Thus as illustrated in Fig. 4, said members are shown applied to a ribbon wound on a spool S. Similarly, the yardage indicating members may be applied to ribbon in any other type of package or put-up.
Thus it is seen that the ribbon provided with the yardage indicating means therefor, asv described therein, is well adapted to accomplish the several objects of the invention. It will be understood, however, that while I have shown and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, the latter may be embodied otherwise than as here shown and that certain changes may be made therein within the scope of the'present invention. Therefore,- I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown or described except as may be required by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A length of sheet material provided with length-measuring means therefor, said measuring-means-comprising a. plurality of individual and separate length-indicating members composed of sheet material, said members being removably secured directly to said length of sheet material between the opposite side edges thereof and in predetermined spaced relation longitudinally thereof, saidmembers being individually and independently attachable to and detachable from said length of material, both surfaces of saidlength of sheet material being completely visible between said indicating members.
2. A length of sheet material provided with length-measuring means therefor, said measuring means comprising a-plurality of individual and separate length-indicating members composed of sheet material, said members being adhesively secured directly-to said length of sheet material in removable relation thereto and in predetermined spaced relation longitudinally thereof, said members being disposed on said sheet-material between the opposite side edges thereof, said members being individually and independently attachable to and detachable fromsaid length of material; said members having parts free from direct securement to said length of material and providing finger pieces to facilitate removal of said individual members, both surfaces of said length of sheet material being completely visible between said indicating members.
3. A length of sheet material provided with length-measuring means therefor, said measuring means comprising a plurality of individual and separate length-indicating members composed of sheet material, said members being removably secured directly to said length of sheet material between the opposite side edges thereof and in predetermined spaced relation longitudinally thereof, said members being independent- 15/ attached to said material in face to face relation therewith by a thermo-plastic adhesive and readily peelable independently of each other from said material together with said adhesive, both surfaces of said length of sheet material being completely visible between said indicating members.
4. A length of sheet material in the form of a winding and provided with measuring means therefor, said measuring means comprising a plurality of individual and separate length-indicating members removably secured directly to said length of sheet material in predetermined spaced relation longitudinally thereof, said members being disposed on said sheet material between the opposite side edges thereof, said members being individually and independently attachable to and detachable from said length of imaterial, the member nearest the outer end of the winding indicating the total length of the material in the winding, each of said members having a part free from direct attachment to said length of material, said unattached parts providing finger pieces to facilitate removal of said members individually from said length of material, both surfaces of said length of sheet material being completely visible between said indicating members.
5. A length of sheet material provided with length-measuring means therefor, said measuring means comprising a plurality of individual and separate length-indicating members removably secured directly to said length of sheet material between the longitudinal side edges thereof and in predetermined spaced relation longitudinally thereof, said members being individually attached to and removable from said length of sheet material, both surfaces of said length of sheet material being completely visible between said indicating members.
