Abstract
752,165. Forging bolts. CARLBORG, C. E. July 16, 1954, No. 20826/54. Class 83 (4). The polygonal head of a bolt or the like is formed by cold heading tubular or bar stock held in a fixed holder, with a plurality of punches at least one of which has radially movable jaws for working the blank in a radial direction. A blank 30, Fig. 5, held in a holder 35, is first headed by a roughing punch, Fig. 1 (not shown), to form a preliminary head 31. The latter is then squeezed into polygonal form 32 by a punch 3, Fig. 2, having a number of jaws 8 defining a hexagonal cavity 9 which receives the head to be forged. The jaws have conical surfaces 13 co-operating with an inner conical surface 14 on a ring 15 screwed on the punch body 3 so that upon the descent of the latter the jaws are moved radially inwards to squeeze the preliminary head 31 into polygonal form 32. The jaws are biased into open position by a spring 7. The polygonal head 32 thus formed is upset into its final shape 33 by a punch 21, Fig. 3, having a polygonal cavity 27, for receiving the head, and a punch member 26 operated by a plunger 25.
