Class 7(6) [Also in Group XXVIII] In a fuel injection pump in which the pump piston 1 is loaded by a spring 5 and actuated by a piston 2 subjected to the pressure in the engine cylinder, the delivery valve 10 is loaded by a pressure which corresponds to the maximum pressure occuring in the engine cylinder so that if this pressure increases, the time of injection is delayed. As shown in Fig. 1, the pump piston is rotatable and has an edge 20 which closes the outlet port 9 and the pump working chamber communicates through a non-return valve 18 with a chamber 14 having an accumulator piston 15 loaded by a spring 16 and a piston 13 which engages the valve 10; the piston 13 is additionally loaded by a spring 12 adjustable by varying the thickness of the washers 30. The chamber 14 is fitted with an adjustable leak-off 22. When the valve 10 is closed the delivery line 11 is relieved, to prevent drip, through the space 28 around the piston 13; this space is closed when the valve is lifted. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the accumulator space 23 is connected through a non-return valve 29 with the engine cylinder and a piston 31 engages a spindle 13 to load the valve 10. Each time the valve 10 is raised, the piston 31 engages and opens the relief valve 32; the length of the stem of the valve 32 may be varied to adjust the leakoff.
