Abstract
751,842. Coating by deposition from the vapour state. RESEARCH INTERESTS, Ltd., [formerly POLLOPAS PATENTS, Ltd.]. Aug. 20, 1951 [Sept. 6, 1950], No. 19564/51. Class 82(2). [Also in Group XXXV] A magnetisable coating is deposited on a non-magnetic tapelike base member to form a magnetic recording tape by vapour deposition whilst the base is moving, the coating material at the moment of deposition being subjected to mechanical, magnetic or electrical oscillations at a frequency so high as to correspond to an inaudible frequency at the intended reproduction speed of the tape. The tape 30 which may be of nylon, perlon, or cellulose acetate, is passed from a reel 8, Fig. 4, over a guide 10 to a take-up reel 7. The guide 10 is mounted in a vacuum chamber 9 in which are also mounted an electrically heated vapourising trough 14 and a magneto-striction generator 12. The chamber 9 and inlet and outlet locks 31, 19 are connected to a diffusion pump 16 and the chamber 9 to a preliminary pump 22. In a modification, Fig. 5, the tape 30 passes in sealing engagement over a slot 27 in a guide on the outside of the vacuum chamber 9. The magnetizable coating may be of iron, steel, nickel or chromium and a further coating of quartz or glass may also be applied by vapour deposition. Alloy coatings may be formed by simultaneous evaporation of alloy components or by the use of a pre-formed alloy. Recording or pick-up heads may be arranged in the vacuum chamber.
